“These urns are hand-built with black clay. The exterior is gently burnished using my grandmother’s old silver spoon. Burnishing takes time and care but allows me to leave most of the exterior unglazed, highlighting the soft beauty of the raw material. The abstract lines on top of the black clay are made with a copper wash. This use of copper is a nod to the practice of placing copper pennies on the eyes of the dead as payment to the ferryman of the underworld, ensuring safe passage to the afterlife.”
Ashes can be placed in a zip lock bag inside a calico bag.
